In the UK we have a dedicated public health body that is split into regions.
Has anyone had any experience with setting up or evaluating new models of public health?
Is there any recent research (within the last three years) nationally or internationally looking at merging public health bodies within a larger region, what this looks like, and how effective it is in achieving its objectives?
Dear Charlotta, there is loads of literature on the centralisation of services and there are some very comon problems (apart from the hassle of the merger of organisations) in the sense that there is always a debate between what is seen as necessary (nowadays usually defined as 'evidence-based) from a central viewpoint and what is feasible from a local perspective (see e.g. Kok et al. 2012. "Practitioner opinions on health promotion interventions that work: opening the 'black box' of a linear Evidence Based approach." Social Science & Medicine 74:715-723). You might want to delve into models like 'experimentalist governance' (Sabel, Charles F., and Jonathan Zeitlin. 2012. "Experimentalist governance." You may study the HIV/AIDS programme of India where they are integrating STI component of programme operating in two departments viz., family planning and HIV/AIDS programme. Similarly there are other components of the programme where the integration is one of the key objectives.

Dear Charlotte,
in México we have a national strategic plan on nutrition, that is even integrated between different departments (health, education) and even our constitution has been changed in order to promote Healthy nutrition. But there are issues in state and county wide implementation and surveillance. So it is ok in theory but no that integrated in practice

I find interesting a PPP (private-public partnership) between the Department of health in the government of Ireland and European Investment Bank.
