The answer lies in RRR i.e reduce reuse and recycle. While govt. in states lie uttarakhand and himachal has been successful in putting a ban on use and sale of plastics/ polythene bags, govt. in delhi and adjoining areas has been unsuccessful. The problem lies in people's attitude. if that is corrected, everything is possible.

I do agree to your point dear Navjyoti that the two states Uttarakhand and Himachal have successfully banned the use of plastic but we are the tourists in these two states and being one of the hot-spot for tourism, plastics can not be avoided. When we say plastic, it doesn't mean only polythene bags, but also the electronic gadgets specially the chinese goods which are being sold in our country in cheaper prices which do not guarantee for its longevity and we dump them as waste. Majority of them are made up of plastics. We need to invent some techniques to get rid of the dumped plastics at the same time we should try to avoid using such products.

As I earlier said, the answer to use of plastic use lies in the three Rs...reduce reuse and recycle. A major chunk of plastic come from use of polythenes, even if that can be reduced to a minimum, that will surely make a huge impact. As for other types of plastics, there is no other option than reuse and recycle currently. Researchers world-wide are trying to develop bio-degradable plastics which would ultimately reduce the problem to a great extent.

I have seen TATA group in jamshedpur who have made roads from the plastic wastes. We need some idea by which we could make difference in the thinking of individuals for recycling and reuse of the plastics.

Of course, education and increase in public awareness are required but, we as consumers should minimize the use of plastics and should write to government and NGOs to take active participation in doing so.
