Hi I have a conditional moderated mediation (Hayes Model 58) through the Johnson Newman technique. We need to convert the variable into a dichotomous variable to see the index of moderated mediation. Traditional approaches such as a mean split or median split may not be ideal because the conditional effect I found only applies to scores up to a certain point.

To recode the variable into a binary classification I'm thinking of grouping the range of the variable that does have a significant effect in one group, with the remaining range of the variable into the second group. This seems to make statistically the most sense.

Any thoughts on this approach?
