Private Universities can perhaps offer better opportunities although at a very high cost. On the other hand, the Public Universities depend on Government Funds, and therefore may not be able to offer opportunities in a better way than those in the Private Universities. However, in the Public Universities, the cost of studying is much less in comparison. As far as good education is concerned, which type of Universities is better?

Actually, in India too, until a few years back, the concept of Private Universities, private in the sense that the Government does not pay salaries and development grants, was not a matter to be taken seriously. There were in fact only two Private Universities in India during the early seventies of the last century. Slowly and steadily, education started to become a business, and Private Universities started to come into existence, with reference to Engineering, Medical and Business Studies. Currently, the number of Private Universities is a huge one.
As Miranda has mentioned, the cost of education in the Private Universities is very high in comparison to the cost in the Public Universities. Education has become a lucrative Business in India of late.
Sir, Difficult to put a general answer covering all private universities in one group and all State universities in the other. In fact if we classify universities providing good and bad education surely in both groups will have members from private and state.

In fact, in India, the Indian Institutes of Technology are also like Public Universities. But they get enough fund from the Central Government. Indeed, even the Central Universities easily get a lot of money from the Central Government. Unfortunately, the State Universities are very poor economically, and therefore such Universities including yours find it hard to compete with Private Universities as far as better opportunities to be offered to the students are concerned.

True, this is the case in India. What is painful is when one starts comparing centrally funded institute with a state funded(neglected!) institute. There should have been uniformity not only in funding patterns, but also in syllabus preparation for all programmes (if feasible) offered , to create equivalent opportunity in terms of infrastructure, quality education for students, benefits to teachers and staffs of central and state funded institutes. So that a healthy competition can be ushered in.
Sooner the concerned authorities (political!!) understand the issue and address it better it is for the future of education, otherwise we are going no where no matter how many new universities / IITs/... are built..... present divide between state and centrally funded institutes in terms of funding is only creating ....
Actually, this problem will continue to exist, and there is hardly any solution in sight. In some State Universities in Central India, the age of retirement is 55. Did you know that? In Bengal, it is 60 even now. On the other hand, the University Grants Commission has already raised it to 65 as you know since 2006. This type of disparities would continue to exist.
Anyway, my question was not really about such disparities in India. I am interested to know whether Public Universities are better than Private Universities as far as academic matters are concerned.
In most of the cases not necessarily. a comparison can be drawn between language medium govt schools and private Eng medium schools!
The question is not about the medium of instruction. Library and laboratory facilities in the private institutes are comparatively better than those in public institutes. Does that really make a difference? This was the question!
@Hemanta sir, In my opinion, Academically most private university are far behind the public sector universities. We have to consider quantity along with quality.
In my country, private universities are a lot more expensive. So, students strive to get a CGP of 4, to get the course they are keen to study, in a public university. Many public universities offering Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy have MOUs with public district hospitals, so that students can get more experience, while still under training. Public universities also try to follow suit. Perhaps the knowledge and skills gained are about the same, while the cost of private universities is a lot more.
Sorry, but in Greece there exist only State Universities, so I cannot estimate the potential situation of Private Universities...
Probably, if they were private, nobody could be a life-time professor, like now.

If we talk about India.. I will support to private universities for example BITS ,VIT ,MANIPAL,SRM and that because of the growth and progress that they have achieved in past few years.. I am studying in VIT and I can clearly see the difference between the other govt. colleges and our college and the reasons are genuine
These universities are rushing and trying their level best to become top notch universities .
Actually the root of poor states of govt colleges is the system itself.. . I odnt see any point in few years these univ will definitely surpasses IIT ans IISC.. It just a matter of time ..BITS has already done that ..VIT ,SRM and MANIPAL are on their way
In most cases, private universities have better chance to be successful than the public universities for many reasons.

I do feel Public sector is better than private one. As their are lot of failure in private universities also mainly they dilute education system too much. and to manage them in future become too hard. Although, few private universities may be better but ONLY FEW. Public sector Panjab, JNU and many more are their to look upon. Look our education level has gone down too much, we don't exist in world ranking anymore (top 100) even our IITs too are not there. According to indian universities, Panjab university is ranked one but in world ranking its 6553

Highly ranked Universities, both private and public, are generally rich, and hence they can provide facilities to students. My question is not about ranking. Usually, the State Universities of India are in financial problems always. That hampers growth.
You are truly right sir. I feel TEAM also matter here in GROWTH. I do remember "MANIPAL UNIVERSITY" in such case. Their VC has appointed good faculties, mainly the people who can generated/write good project and get funding/money to the university. And more than me, i feel you are better person to answer this.
A University in India has to have the '12B status' to be able to apply for funds from the University Grants Commission, My University does have the '2F' status, which means that the degrees we offer are valid. However, we do not yet have the 12B status. Accordingly, teachers from my University are unable to apply for UGC funds. Of course, funds from DST, DBT, ICSSR are available.
my opinion Private Universities is best for teaching,because we can get all latest equipped are available and will get soon from that universities.

Its nice to hear your opinion. In my view, in regards to instruments, these days govt has started alot of INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING PROJECTS. As examples,DST- FIST ........for example.....Bangalore University they have all possible instruments. Ya, i can understand in regards to funding your own consumable......For fund that even private universities need to write project to govt agencies. Correct me, sir please if i am wrong. In regards to teaching, we can't question any one. eg Dr. Ramchadran Sir, Dr. Ramanujan sir, and many more they belongs to PUBLIC institutions. Even the person, who has stated this question is also a GREAT MATHEMATICIAN. Dear Doc, I am not against private colleges teaching but this is to just put a word through.

Private colleges can offer good laboratory facilities because they charge too high fees. On the other hand, government funded institutes do not in general ask for high fees, and ultimately good laboratory facilities may not be available in such institutes. The question was not about good teaching!

Facilities in the Private Institutes should be better because they take high fees from the students. However, you can not say that teaching is also of a higher standard in the Private Institutes!
Sorry to interrupt Dr. Revathi but I still feel teaching can not be questioned.
