Further, I would like to adds on based on the individual experiences, though my background is not core mechanical engineering but I don't find myself untouched from it's outcomes. The following aspects may be considered for your question:
1. I found IE subjects as a feedback systems to what have been created and where have to lead further. For Ex: if an item is designed to perform certain role in avaition then the feedback systems will ask you to provide the informations on it's reliable operation (Reliability), next failure event, causes of failure and it's indepth failure analysis, counter measures to avoid failure in terms of applied maintenance (if repairable and if not then how frequently replacement required/ Life Cycle), Maintenance Cost/LCC, Its Sustainance, Maintainability to make it operational within available resources and time,the management roles to streamline the flow of actions including all resources I.e. man , material, machine & money, forecasting etc to achieve it's primary goal and the assurance of faithful operation (QA) as per standard.
2. After getting the feedback you will next move to either correct the existing system/ Item or redesign the item. If you are in correcting/ improving the system, you will further need Quality Control operations, understanding the failures, errors, and reducing the randomness, Optimising the resources and solutions. If you are in redesign phase, then you would like to explore it's past history of all operations, failures and life cycle and other significant data as lesson learning along with the current requirements that need to be incorporated like the item should be as per current Standards/ Norms, More Efficient, Highly Effective, Highly Reliable, Easy Maintainable or even Maintenance free, Intelligent, Compact, Portable or Mobile, User friendly, Customer Driven, Eco supporting, Lesser in cost, Enhanced Life etc.
3. To conclude, I actually found IE subjects are a complete package of Engineering and Management Skills. You could actually realize all the phase of your creativity, learning and contribution of Engineering. So, All that is being created by ME, I would say it is further nurtured by IE.
