Educational technology can unintentionally widen the achievement gap when students lack access to devices, internet, or digital literacy. Many platforms are designed without considering diverse learning needs, cultural backgrounds, or resource limitations. To promote equity, EdTech must be inclusive by design, offer low-tech alternatives, and involve underrepresented communities in development and implementation.
Educational technology has the potential to transform education, but if not thoughtfully designed and implemented, it can unintentionally widen the achievement gap. This often occurs when students from marginalized or low-income backgrounds lack access to essential resources such as internet connectivity, up-to-date devices, or a supportive home environment for learning. Additionally, many EdTech tools assume a certain level of digital literacy, which not all students or educators possess equally. Platforms are frequently built with a one-size-fits-all approach, failing to accommodate diverse learning needs, languages, cultural backgrounds, and disabilities. For example, students with special needs or those who speak minority languages may struggle to engage with content that does not reflect their realities or offer appropriate support. To address these challenges and design for equity, educational technology must be inclusive by default. This means ensuring accessibility across different devices and bandwidth levels, offering multilingual and assistive features, and incorporating diverse voices especially from underrepresented communities into the design and decision-making process. Equitable EdTech also requires ongoing digital literacy training for teachers and students, and regular evaluation of tools to identify and eliminate barriers. By centering empathy, inclusion, and access, we can ensure that technology serves as a bridge rather than a barrier in education.
Educational technology seen as a tool to improve learning and narrow the achievement gap, can sometimes have unintended consequences that can actually widen the gap between high- and low- students achievers.
For instance, Not all students have equal access to technology. Students from lower-income families may not have access to computers, high-speed internet, or other necessary technology, leading to a digital divide that can further exacerbate existing inequalities in education.
Consequently, even when all students have access to technology, some may use it more effectively or frequently than others. Students who are already high-achieving may be more likely to utilize educational technology to its full potential, while lower-performing students may struggle to effectively incorporate technology into their learning.
Similarly, Educational technology often relies on algorithms to make recommendations or assessments, but these algorithms can sometimes be biased against certain groups of students, leading to unequal outcomes.
To mitigate these unintended consequences and design for equity, there's need for schools and educational institutions to ensure that all students have equal access to technology and necessary digital resources, either by providing the equipment or by offering access to computer labs or other shared spaces.
Additionally, teachers are expected to provide individualized support to ensure that all students are effectively utilizing educational technology. This can include differentiated instruction, additional support for lower-performing students, and more challenging tasks for higher-performing students.
