In Western classrooms, writing instruction often emphasizes individual voice, critical thinking, and originality. But for many EAL/ESL students, these expectations clash with cultural values like group harmony, respect for authority, and learning through imitation. A great article by Ramanathan & Atkinson (1999) explores how North American academic writing is rooted in individualism, and why it’s essential for educators to recognize and bridge cultural differences, not erase them. Culturally responsive teaching matters. Let’s support our students by valuing their perspectives and making expectations explicit.
