I'm started working in the synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals but I had some problems with that. The literature say that before the acid hydrolysis I must do a alkali hydrolysis with NaOH and after that I must separate the lignin with centrifugations and filtrations but I don't know what exactly separate. Can you help me with that?
Basically, a bleaching step is done to remove lignin , mostly acidified sodium chlorite, and afterwards KOH or NaOH treatment removes hemicellulose and other extractives. You can confirm this simply by FT-IR after every treatment. Centrifugation is done to separate the larger agglomerates that has not been converted to nanodimensions and the supernatent will give you nanodimensional particles.
