I am looking for a categorization system of observable workplace behaviors. Ideally there would be some broad categories with a number of subareas. I am looking to apply it in the area of performance assessments. There seem to be so many, apparently arbitrary, areas of rating workplace behaviors. I am looking for some standard means of clustering behaviors which is not too granular in nature.
With reference to performance assessments, you can use the classification of workplace behaviors into in-role behaviors, extra-role counter-productive behaviors (CWBs), and extra-role organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Google scholar will provide you enough research literature on this classification.
In addition, your personal observation and assessment of your organizational behavior is key to what you set out to do. Due to discrepancies in organizational climate and culture, your best bet is to develop one that will be customized to your organization.
Start a baseline exercise that will enable you closely observe manifestation of different workplace behaviors, after that begin to align the likes together and classify them into one group. The more of the behaviors you are able to establish the better so that you can have them grouped into the clusters that fit them. After that you can start to give major labels to the different clusters of work behaviors you have identified and give a clear definition that will not only reveal what you want to measure in generic terms but also provide clarity for the properties/elements inside the clusters.
Your best bet is to narrow down your search to performance appraisal/evaluation. Performance assessment is broader and is all over the place in the organization as an ubiquitous factor in many modern organizations. In performance appraisal literature, look for performance behavior groups, ratal factors, performance indicators, employee work behaviors, etc., I am sure you will get resources to assist you in formulating the steps to take in your classification effort.

Fortunately, I am finding some broad conceptualizations under which more specfic behaviors can be classed. Even the very broad concepts of in-role and extra-role categories are quite helpful to me.
You 're very welcome. Another thing you can do is to first come up with a number of observable work behaviors peculiar to your organization and the larger industry in which it operates. From there, you should be able to pick from those "in-role, extra role and organizational citizen behaviors" as sub-behaviors that you will be grouping under the generic factors for the performance appraisal. You will provide a clear definition of the generic factors on top and assign rates to the sub-behaviors under each category for effective measurement. Good luck in your endeavor.
