In the absence of steam explosion or reactor what else can we use to break down the struture of lignocellulosic biomass?

Mostly we use steam explosion or any reactor to breakdown the struture of biomass depending on the type of pretreatment we are using. What else we can use if we dont have these facilities or equipments ?
