In machine learning, it's easy to distinguish between rank and order as verbs, but when they are used as nouns, sometimes I cannot tell the difference?
For example: There are 5 instances to be ordered, they are A(1), B(5), C(2), D(3), E(9). Now, based on the scores in the parentheses, what is the order, the rank, and the rank-order of the instances?

I suppose, order relates to quantity and rank to quality. I mean, when we put things in order, we've assigned a number to each one based upon a property which all have and can be measured or counted, like position, size, height, etc. But we rank things based on those properties that are relative/comparative and cannot be measured or counted, like beauty, effectiveness, completeness, etc. In my opinion, If we be able to assign a precise number to a quality (for instance, GPA and smartness) and then order things(students) with that quality based on the assigned numbers(GPA's), so we have rank-order of those instances.

According to wiki/ranking, if these 5 instances are ranked in ascend based on the scores, then, E's ranking number is 1, and B gets ranking number 2, ... Here, "the ranking number" can be equivalent to "the rank-order"?
Well, the order of these five instances should be a sequence of ranking numbers, for my example, is it 52431?
An ordered set simply means that you've provide an enumeration, which may not have anything to do with the classification or physical measures involved in your problem. A ranking, though implies some innate order in your problem, a measure of severity for instance. A common choice might rank the classes such that classification errors between adjacent classes carry a minimum penalty, a distance measure based on misclassification cost.
For classification problem, we need build an equivalent relationship between the class labels and instances, but classificaiton isnot ranking.
