I'm alkylating phenol with tertiary butanol. The formed ortho, para and di-substituted products are well separated in GC. However literature indicates there will be considerable amount of meta product. I have run authentics of para and meta in various columns like SE-30, HP-5 and HP-FFAP.., both have similar retention times and coalescing to give a single peak. I'm indecisive and in desperate need of suggestion from anyone. Thank you very much in advance
This sort of troubles frequently occurred in phytochemistry . In such case we go for derivatisation of any one of the component with suitable protocol definitely helps you in the analysis.

In the literature you can find examples where cresol isomers were separated with very polar capillary columns like Polyethyleneglycol (for example, Carbowax, Elite-Wax, Supelco-Wax, Stabilwax, DB-FFAP)
Have you tried with other analytical technique? HPLC could be also suitable.
