I can give you a conceptual answer on your question. Basically, the NOMA is considered as an extra degree of multiplexing for the base band signals on the carriers. There are the frequency division, phase division, amplitude division and code division multiplexing. So, NOMA as amplitude division multiplexing is applied when the phase and frequency are same. It is so that the near channel with high transmission factor is assigned smaller power and that far with the low transmission factor is assigned a larger power. In this way one can detect and decode the information sent on the two channels. So, NOMA will increase the channel bit rate for the same bandwidth and therefore increases the spectral efficiency.
