Donald Trump's recent global strategy sees Africa as market for US goods. According to him, “We will offer American goods and services, both because it is profitable for us and because it serves as an alternative to China’s often extractive economic footprint on the continent”. What is i this strategy for African countries? Or is just to the benefit of Trump's America, a la "America First" mantra?

But I believe that if governors of African countries were able to negotiate good contracts, they can "use" this advantage of Africa as a big market to make it all good not just for America.
But, indeed, it´s a big challenge. I agree with you that the mantra can overcome all this and let Africa behind again. UNFORTUNATELY!

You are absolutely on point regarding African leaders sizing the opportunity to negotiate contract and terms that are beneficial to Africa and Africans. The ball is indeed in their court. But if history is anything to go by, I am sore afraid, Africa and Africans will lose again.
About ~60% of new arable land in the world is on the African continent; this land (resources) is being sold and bought by international rentier groups. Of course, nobody wants to be late, when it comes to establish new monopolies in the landlord's game of privatizing natural resources.
I think that Donald Trump thinks in commerce only. He is a man with no humanity. Best regards.

Africa should develop their own international economic strategic engagement framework with world powers.National interests of African nations should be articulated and placed on the discussion agenda. In international economic diplomacy, nations advance their national interest as in politics among nations.
Ask, why not both? Don't underestimate Africa. The most powerful tool of progress is available to us all, which is - the ability to think. Moreover, ponder, most of the disadvantages of Africa are being swept aside by information technology.
