In connectiong or joining various datasets, I am wondering which approach makes more sense? PROC append or SET steps?

Since I might work on big dataset in future, in whick i might need to merge relatively large datasets, in this case, what approach i should follow? Should I simply join by proc append or should I use SET statements?

I think better to use set statement as by using proc append , original data set name will be changed so.
