In some US universities, the number of dollars generated through research grants is highly valued regardless of the number of publications in journals and/or conferences. In others, there is a minimum requirements for dollar figures generated and number of quality articles published. What is your opinion on the proper balance for assessing faculty scholarship.

Grants are not easily obtained in my field, so I personally do not give them much consideration. My observation is that social work faculty who are grant funded tend to subsume their research interests to other disciplines, for example, healthcare. I do believe that institutions, however, seem to value grant funding more than any other measure of productivity.
Evaluating the quality of published articles has never been easier with all of the new citation metrics (RG factor, Google Scholar citations, etc.), but there is still a substantial problem with less popular specialties receiving less attention by other researchers.

Actually, since the main objective of research grants is promotion of knowledge and research, there is no other way of optimizing the objective than use of publication output. The publications will best generate multipler effect .
