I am carrying out a coupled thermal-mechanical simulation in Abaqus, using my own UMAT.
At the first step, I am just running the thermal case with kinematic constraints.After this step, I obtain the displacements , say U_Thermal( due to thermal expansion)
At the second step , I would like to impose a displacement of some U + U_Thermal ( obtained in step -1)
How do I do this ?
Restart analysis perhaps will work for you. though your question looks confusing as one displacement can be deactivated for the other step.
You just apply U at the second step. The total displacement will be U+U_Thermal
@ Guodong : U_thermal is not known before the simulation. I need to stop at step -1 and feed it to step -2

You may use "stateNew" as state variables or solution dependent variables (SDV) of UMAT. SDVs are called for every integration point of the model and for all increments regardless of how many steps you have defined in your model. Suppose that the parameter you want to pass through all increments and steps is "eldisp" that stand for "element displacement". You can do this as below:
stateNew(k,1) = eldisp
which k is the identifier of "Do" loop and 1 (for example) is the number of SDV (for example SDV1) for your parameter. You will be able to see the "eldisp" contour as "S" in the visualization module. I hope this could help you with your problem.
