In my questionnaire:
I have asked, " How frequently a certain topic is taught?"
A 4 point Likert scale was developed for the response where following values were assigned to each response:
Never: 1, Rarely :2, Often: 3, Always :4
Recently I have been told that for Never one should assign the value 0, as it's value should not be reflected in the final result.
To what extent it is correct.
P.S: With Value 1 to Never, my results look more logical than value 0
Manisha - 4-point Likert scale is same as 5-point & 7-point i.e. each point have its own definition / label. The only difference is that in a 4-point Likert scale respondents don't have a choice to select neutral option. You need a range of numerical values which could range from 1-4 and to determine the minimum and the maximum length of the 4-point Likert type scale, the range is calculated by (4 − 1 = 3) then divided by four as it is the greatest value of the scale (3 ÷ 4 = 0.75). This range gives the weight of the responses. For example, if the total respondents is 50 and the scale range is 1= Never, 2= Rarely, 3= Often, and 4= Always. A Likert scale is generally 3,5,7,9, point.Nowadays business houses are using an even number scale like 4 point as they want a sure shot opinion which means they dont want a normal reading.There is no need of assigning 0 for never.This could very comfortably be 1.Likert is an ordinal scale and never here means the least which is 1 so it is ok.
