Though we have several contact models in PFC (Particle Flow Code), at what circumstances Hetz - Mindlin contact model can be chosen for a particular Geo-technical model? Could any one provide brief information regarding this?
I used to read the information about Hertz contact model in the manual of PFC 5.0, the most obvious difference between Hertz and Parallel Bond Model is that the update of the contact force, The update of Force in Hertz model is not in linear relation with respect to incremental displacement between the two particles. It can partly reflect the hysteresis phenomenon when Hertz model is selected. So in my own opinion, the Hertz model can be used to simulate the obvious viscous material, such as Asphalt.
In this model, force and displacement are related non-linearly through stiffness coefficient. This coefficient is a function of geometry, properties of contact components and normal force.
In general, this model is more suitable for modeling the accumulation of non-adherent grains with little strain.
