since the S11639-01 consists of a onedimensional sensor array, frame rate = line rate = number of complete readouts of the array per second.

Data rate is the number of single sensor values per second. In you case:

4000 lines/s * 2048 sensors = 8 192 000 values/s

so, the maximum data rate of 10 M/s is well suited for your application.

The driver mentioned on p. 8 of the datasheet is the hardware you need to use the sensor array, to convert its analog output signal to a 16 bit digital signal, and to transmit the data to a PC via a USB 2.0 connection.

USB is a serial connection, i. e. only one bit is transmitted per clock cycle. Therefore, the transmission of the raw data results in

8192000 values/s * 16 bit = 131 072 000 bit/s.

The brutto transfer rate of USB 2.0 is 480 Mb/s, so it meets your requirements provided that there are no other USB devices with high data rate at the same bus, and that the CPU of the PC is not burdened by other heavy tasks. The driver itself supports the maximum speed (10 M/s) of the sensor array, as it says on p. 2 of the data sheet:

If developing the electronic environment for the sensor array is not the main topic of your project, I would advise you to buy the ready C13015-01, and use it (if the goal of the project is not just planning but implementation).

I agree with Goerg and i will not repeat him. But before, you need to define your frames.

Frames are defined in number of lines in progressive scanning normally used in computer displays. Each line has a specific number of pixels(picture elements which can be considered one sample. If your frames are lines as hinted by Goerg and the number of pixels per line as he indicated, then all the calculations he made can be recommended in straight forward manner.

Video signals are characterized normally by wide bandwidth, and high data rate.

I feel that being a physicist gives you a solid background for understanding electronics (at least, you are familiar with basic laws and basic quantities).

Because your goal is to develop not integrated circuits but modules made from ICs and discrete components, your main topic is circuit design; therefore, you could start with a book like:

Johnson, Graham: "High-speed digital design. A handbook of black magic", Prentice-Hall, 1993, ISBN 0-13-395724-1

Don't let the title confuse you, it's a serious book. In my opinion, the developers of ICs know the properties of their ICs best. So, with the basics under your belt, you can rely on datasheets and application hints, published by the manufacturer, in most cases.
