Would it be, perhaps, to ENHANCE THE OVERALL QUALITY OF LIFE (MORAL IMPERATIVE) FOR ALL OF HUMANKIND? History is replete with examples where novel research with practical results gives rise to the most reprehensible/amoral/immoral forms of such research, eg The Military Industrial Complex, producing WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, with War Ships ENCIRCLING THE GLOBE!
