Normally in drought stress condition I found that the phenolic and flavonoids were increased.I used magnetic water as a treatment in some plant species.
It depends in which media are the plant. If phenol or flavanoid production is high in MS growth media usually the plant cannot be cultured. It turns the media toxic for the plant. This is the case for mango plant. In the wild the phenolic compounds act as protection against threats and stress conditions, so these are two separate cases in vitro and in the wild.
It is not recommended to continue with cultures since browning will escape to the culture medium. It is advisable to add ascorbic acid at 150 mg.L plus citric acid at 100 mg.L as anti oxidants. Oxidated phenols are toxic to plant cultures
Yes, phenolic and flavonoids are beneficial as in plant growth as in stress contitions. They are part of cell wall (ligning), they participate in cell wall relaxation during cell elngation processes. In stress contitions- they act as a chelatation agents in plants culivated in medium enriched with heavy metals. They act as good scavengers of free radicals - more OH bands better antioxidant potential (flavonoids, coumarins etc.). and this is only small part of their functions.
