I do not think medication administration is the "most important"  but, 'one of the most'. Definitely, medication administration is important. Equally important  is educating the patient on the medications you are administering. You do not want the patient back in hospital, therefore,  education on secondary and tertiary prevention of his/her issues are equally important.

Nurses and society used to recognize the tangible skills rather than cognitive and emotional part of nursing profession 

It will be lot of articels describing what i the nurse jobb are of impotens for the patienten and nursing care. Take for exampel the theory beyound assessment of nursing intensity. Nursing describes from diffrent nursing needs area. Often we can found 5/6 diffrent area and the administration of drocs is one of them. If the nurse are using al day to administrat drogs she will not take account all needs the patient have, and then we don\t have good care.So what can we do. More education, you have to show the caregivers that nursing is much more the drogs. Good lyck!

My research focus is on the relationship between functional social support and diabetes self-care behaviors. In the case of diabetes the number of medications we have available to treat the disease has skyrocketed yet the number of people with the disease has increased and the number of people at goal and the reduction in complications is not comensurate to the number of medications we have available to treat the disease. The role of the nurse in diabetes care is monitoring and establishing goals for treatment but in this case the patient is doing a lot of self-care so the nurse is also one of the healthcare practitioners who is responsible for educating the patient on diabetes self-care  and in the case of type 1 diabetes all patients need insulin whereas type 2 will be diet and exercise, oral medications or insulin. The nurses job is to provide informational support as well as tangible support such as administering medications in hospital environment. see attached article. But in the case of diabetes as well as other chronic illnesses the initial phase is medication administration but then patient education and emotional and affectionate support comes in to play to encourage patient participation in care o improve overall outcomes and healing.

There is a lot of literature on medication errors and nurses' perception of medication errors. Institutions care about patient satisfaction and patient perspectives on care. Patient perspective is one aspect of the "care provided" and nursing documentation of what interventions were completed is another aspect. Nurses have to remember to administer meds correctly and timely. Administering meds "late" or with errors will affect the care provided and possibly the patient's perspective on care.
