The hippocampus has many functions. One of those functions include the conversion of short term memory into long term memory. Evidence shows that long term memories are distributed throughout many sites in the neocortex. In early stage AD, recently stored memories are impaired. However, in later stage disease, longer term memories are also impaired and individuals often cannot remember even close family members, such as sons, daughters, or spouses. Do our current theories on AD support these observations? I am not sure. Further work is needed.
