I determine only microscopically and I think the results, for our purpose, are satisfactory. Of course, the determinations of cryptic species, or those whose morphological features are distinguishable essentially only at SEM, remain designated as sp. or agg. The truth is that it would often be enough to perform microscopy under 1000x magnification, but the algae is found many times in only one specimen, or there is no time for more detailed identification.
