Today’s students, more than ever, often find course-based learning to be boring and meaningless.
In PBL, students are active, not passive; a project engages their hearts and minds, and provides real-world relevance for learning.
After completing a project, students remember what they learn and retain it longer than is often the case with traditional instruction.
Because of this, students who gain content knowledge with PBL are better able to apply what they know and can do to new situations.
What do you think about established this type of center in your country?

I read your paper's abstract. However I think it is more different to PBL but I think it is an interesting idea. But my main question is do you have any PBL research and training private center in your country? What do you think about established this type of center?

On the one hand, the theoretical course curriculum is a must in the academia as it establishes the strong fundamental base in the scientific sense. These are the rules and laws the we find common for many areas and that one must be familiar with to be able to upgrade. But the theory seems often dry and is tedious for the students and therefore they cannot understand it very well, as it is difficult for them to apply it to the real world.
On the other hand, students need practice. That is why there exist laboratories where students make connection between theory and practice. And it would be best if this practice is related to a real world problem, to something meaningful and useful.
That is why in general I agree that project based learning is among the best possible approaches nowadays.
But few questions/thoughts arise here for me:
- a single project can give invaluable experience in building a real world device, but it cannot cover all of the desired aspects in the field of studied course.
- I'm working for a university and I have groups of about 10 - 20 students who change each semester. How can I divide the tasks between them?
- not all of the students are well motivated and prepared for solving real world tasks
- and the major question for me is - how do I get funding for the project? Maybe if I could find a well funded project I could form one or two groups of few students who would work for that project and of course publish papers and defend their theses and maybe continue their research further and so on.
The situation in my university is that there is complete lack of funding and we are not very well equipped mainly due to financial reasons and bureaucracy reasons. And because of that I have to work in a private company in the same time. That is why it is very difficult for me to found a PBL center. Otherwise PBL is my dream...
What is your experience in establishing a PBL center? What were the main difficulties (undoubtedly it was not easy)? What are your recommendations? Do you think it is possible that we can have a real bilateral cooperation activity in this area?

This is research and training center. In this center we should do following steps:
1. Defined a project such as master/PhD thesis.
2. register some students ( for example 8-15 students) for one year, 3 hours and one's a weak.
3. each student should pay about 2000$ (in IRAN) to center for registration.
4. We should divided this project into 4-6 steps (regarding to projects).
5. we should train each steps to students and after that our students should to design/modeling/implementation each steps regarding to training. (all projects are software based on MATLAB and XILINX software)
6. after training all steps and doing all steps by students they should defined unique objective and doing new methodology regarding to previous training and project steps.
7. Comprehensive Examination
8. Thesis Examination
9. in final steps they should extract some papers from projects.
Therefore, our project found is extract from student tuition fee. For good student we also have promotion such as half tuition fee waver.
In Iran some of PhD student help me to training student, and some of professors from university also help me to defined projects and writing proposal.
From 2009 to now we train about 150 students and some of them got scholarships for higher education (master and PhD) from different countries such as US, Canada, South Korea, Finland, Italy, Germany, Malaysia and Iran.
In these projects I am supervisor/team leader and train some topics regarding to each project. All projects are in field of nonlinear control, artificial intelligent and micro-electronic devices (FPGA).
