One of my advisers has suggested that the data collection method using drawings is called projective techniques. I am not familiar with this and am starting to read some literature. Basically, I would also do an interview but I would use drawings as a springboard of discussion with the child. I would like to see medication adherence "through their eyes".
I am not familiar with the technique and would appreciate any input from anyone especially the pool of expert qualitative researchers around here. Thank you!
I'd really like to help with suggestions. Just to clarify: You want to research children's perception of adherence to medication? if so, would that be any medication/condition or specific, e.g. for depression, ADHD or??
If I have it all wrong can you clarify, please?
P.S. I've used projective techniques with children many years ago, for therapy. There are projective instruments in psychology for children.

I'm glad to know about your study its a good one... Even I'm working on the same topic.. In geriatrics it will be easy to make them adherent either through narrative pictographs and story boards and the sample principle applies here.. the results are getting positive and this is even creating interest in children to take their medication.

I wonder, though, from my experience children are not at liberty to decide adherence to taking their medication. Mommy, daddy, a nurse, or some other adult is there to make sure they do-- at least that's my experience.

@Mary-Helen: the specific condition is Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I also appreciate that adherence among kids is highly influenced by the carers/parents but that is I want to uncover. A part of the dynamics that I want to investigate is the dynamics of parental influence over the child's adherence behaviour. The definition of adherence is imposed by healthcare professionals but I want to see it from the kid's eyes. What is adherence for them? I would like to explore projective techniques and I am wondering whether this appropriate. If you could share your experience to its use and also resources that I might get in order to understand the technique better and how it would complement my interview.
@Deepak: Thanks for the comment. However, I am not sure, correct me if I am wrong but are you using the pictographs and story board as an intervention for geriatric patients to increase adherence? In my case, I would just like to use it as a complementary tool for my methodology not really an intervention. However, your study sounds great too!
@Abha: That is exactly my plan, to do a dyadic interview with parent and child but in order for me to avoid consensus bias, I would like to interview them separately as well. (Hoping it would be alright my Ethics!) Did you use a pictograph tool before and if so, I would appreciate if you could share your resources.
You might want to look at the HIV literature in sub-Saharan Africa for adherence to ARV drugs and children. There are a number of studies that have used arts-based methods such as drawing, photovoice, story-telling etc.
