recently, i'm reading paper 'Liquid electrolyte lithium/sulfur battery: Fundamental chemistry, problems, and solutions. Sheng S. Zhang. Journal of Power Sources 231 (2013) 153-162.'

while reading, there is a sentence "Since dissolution of PS in the liquid electrolyte is inevitable and is essential for the cell’s performance,~"

I understand that dissolution of PS is "inevitable"

but, I wonder why dissolution of PS is "essential"?

is that for proceding with further process (discharging region 2~4)?

without dissolution of PS, there is no discharging reaction in region 2~4?
