I would suggest considering one or two streets in each major district. I would be skeptical if you focused exclusively on a specific district like Bole or Lideta.
I cannot speak to specific variables as effectively due to my lack of expertise on urban history and planning, but the ones that occur to me off-hand are:
Population density near each region you study.
Availability of public transit.
Distribution of residential/commercial properties.
Mr. Holbert gave a good answer above. I’ll take a different approach: a traffic engineer does not perform a traffic study on a city...that is too huge an area to consider by oneself. The data collection alone would take far too long to conduct and compile.
• Are you focusing on the impacts of trip generation associated with a new development or new zoning?
• Are you creating a large traffic simulation model?
• Are you focused on particular roadway corridor or zone?
• Are you examining weekday and/or weekend peak or off-peak conditions?
• Is there a database of existing traffic counts?
Perhaps you can provide more exact parameters to your initial question.
Hello, Mr Holbert and Mr Steven has spoken so well. Just like Mr Steven said, you need to concentrate on a specific task. First define whether it is macroscopic traffic condition or microscopic traffic condition.
Let's say you are going for microscopic, the data you need will vary from that of the macroscopic. You will need data like
1. Hourly traffic volumes(you can obtain this by counting, from the state transport ministry or by prognosis.
2. You need the geometric parameters of the intersections you want to analyse(on this note I would advise you deal on only major intersections, maybe the ones with the most traffic congestion)
3. The analysis itself with softwares or by hand.
On the other hand, if it is the macroscopic traffic condition you want to study, then you need the
1. Land use data (this will help in the trip origin and destination and zones)
2. The OD pairs
3. Geometry of links, stops, etc.
It is also worthwhile to note that you should make up your mind on whether you are focusing on private transport or PuT as the approaches may differ
