Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) offer a promising pathway for merchant vessels to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 due to their high energy density and zero operational greenhouse gas emissions. Their compact and modular design makes them suitable for integration into ships, potentially revolutionizing maritime propulsion by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, significant challenges—including safety concerns, regulatory hurdles, public perception issues, waste management, and technological readiness—must be addressed. By investing in research and development, establishing international regulatory frameworks, and fostering stakeholder collaboration, SMRs could play a pivotal role in decarbonizing the maritime industry and meeting global climate goals.
