There are some common technologies for sea water desalination including Multi-Stage Flash Distillation (MSF), Multi-Effects Distillation (MED), Vapor Compression (VC) Distillation, Reverse osmosis (RO), and electrodialysis (ED). However the energy requirements are different for each technologies. The energy requirements for the MSF, MED, and VC are virtually independent of salt concentration, while the energy requirements for the membrane processes are highly dependent on concentration. RO and ED are usually used for both seawater and brackish water whereas others are only for seawater desalination. In comparison with seawater desalination, brackish water desalination cost is lower due to low TDS concentration in feed water for brackish water requires less energy for treatment compared to high TDS feed water (seawater).
