When I cut the optical fiber, due to the large diameter of the fiber, cracks are formed on the surface.
By polishing the fiber, the fiber surface becomes angular.
This phenomenon greatly affects the scattering of photons.
Is there information about the best way to polish high-diameter optical fibers?
Assuming the fiber is glass, not plastic, place the fiber in a sacrificial collar of similar or ideally slightly harder material, like a ceramic, using stiff optical pitch or glue to fill the void space between the collar and the fiber to ensure it stays in place and parallel to the collar. Then perform the usual lapidary work on the collar with a proper lapidary machine, not hand lapidary - which cannot really keep the workpiece truely normal to the abrasive.
You will find the addition of the sacrificial collar will greatly reduce the surface curvature of the fiber as well as etching and spalling of the fiber. Once you are happy with the polishing work you can heat the collar to soften the pitch or glue and gently remove the collar. Use a chemical solvent to remove the remaining goop. This will allow you to achieve a flatter surface figure and preserve cleaner edges.
This setup also lends itself to polishing bundles of fibers, provided they are kept parallel and cannot move withing the collar.
In recent decade we have gotten away from true lapidary treatment of fiber terminations, using hand lapping with abrasive films - that works only because the radius of curvature relative to the diameter of telecommunications fibers ( 50 or 62.5 microns ) is small to the polished surface is still reasonably flat. For large diameter fibers, its not, so a coaxial collar and proper lapidary setup is needed.
