Black Spot is a free stand alone software and method to estimate leaf area from images of leaves captured using standard flatbed scanners. This easy to use software allows the user to batch process a large number of samples from multiple species with minimal user input.

The leaf area can be measured by direct and indirect methods. In direct methods (destructive methods), leaves are removed from the plant and measurements are done using expensive tools such as digital leaf area meter. However, the non-destructive methods (regression techniques) based on linear measurements of plant leaves are relatively accurate, quicker and effortless to be implemented in several crops

Gravimetric methods. The sheet to be measured is covered with tin foil, which is very carefully cut and weighed. Knowing the weight P of this tin foil, its thickness e and its specific weight p, we derive its surface area S, which is also that of the foil to be measured: "_. S =P/(e-p)

Planimetric methods. A first very simple technique consists in placing the sheet on a glass plate; a sheet of transparent millimetre paper is placed on this plate and the light is shone brightly from below. The outline of the sheet is then drawn on the paper and the number of squares contained in the area thus delimited is counted. Each square corresponds to 1 mm2.
