You can employ action research method with out hesitation, and simultaneously, I hope you can also adopt Participatory observation method, to record constant results.
Sean - your question seems a bit 'out of odds'. If you are talking about a treatment group and a control group - then one assumes some sort of quasi/experimental study - and a very small sample one at that. They can be used in either action research or mixed methods - but they are only a component of them. On their own - they do not represent either approach. The other issue is that action research is a mixed methods approach. The attached chapter may assist.
The information is in adequate from which you can get the input you want. But in any case except you want to generalise you findings I think you can use action research.
