Hello Parra - I don't know much about this except that recently Bob Quinn from the Eskitis institute at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, just recently appointed a postdoc research fellow to look at inhibition of Trypanosoma using structure activity relationships (SAR) of derivatised compounds. If you are keen enough, you could contact this institute and request a collaboration or some information about plant origins.

I worked with Pouteria alnifolia during my M.Sc. It is used locally here for treatment of sleeping sickness. It showed excellent in vitro activity against T. brucei brucei. Noteworthy also is that while doing the ethno-medicinal survey the following interaction took place between myself and a herbalist(Traditional Medicine Practitioner: TMP)

Me: Sir, what plant do you use for treating sleeping sickness?

TMP (Looking slightly bemused): The cola nut of course!!!

Me: How do you make your formulation?

TMP(Now looking less friendly): Bring me a he-goat that has never bleated.

Me: How do you mean, Sir?

TMP: Bring me a he-goat that has never bleated.

Needles to say, I never found one. Therein is the demon of my science.

I haven't done any studies on this subject, but there a few publications that are worthy of consideration. You may find the summary below interesting.

Plants such as Khaya senegalensis and Terminalia avicenniodes are used in the treatment of trypanosomosis in animals (Maikai et al., 2010). Studies have also shown that extracts of Albizia gummifera, Ehretia amoena , Entada abyssinica, Securinega virosa and Vernonia subuligera have anti-trypanosomial activity (Freiburghaus et al., 1996). Quinoline alkaloids obtained from Cinchona bark and emetine, an isoquinoline alkaloid obtained from Cephaelis ipecacuanha (Hoet et al, 2004), as well as camptothecin , a pentacyclic alkaloid from Camptotheca acuminata (Nyssaceae), have all demonstrated promising anti- trypanosomial activity (Bodley and Shapiro, 1995). It has also been reported by Moideen et al. (1999) that extracts of the stem bark and root bark of Kigelia pinnata possess marked anti-trypanosomial activity against bloodstream forms of both T. b. brucei and T. b. rhodesiense. Several other studies also exist, which can be easily sourced from publications on the subject.

I suggest that there are many medicinal plants that show Antitrypanosomal Activity from some tropical part of the world for example in My country IRAN two plants such as Boerhavia elegans and Solanum surattense used for this activity.
