We are planning a study with adolescent children with ASD. They will be high functioning and able to read. I was thinking self-report, but would also consider a parent-report measure of emotion regulation, if anyone has any suggestions.
In my dissertation I used the Emotion regulation questionnaire with two sub-constructs - Cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression (Gross and John, 2003).
In a study of severely traumatized refugees, we used the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (Gratz & Roemer, 2004) to index emotion dysregulation. This scale comprises the six types of emotion regulation, including non-acceptance of emotional responses (e.g., When I’m upset, I become embarrassed for feeling that way); difficulties engaging in goal-directed behavior (e.g., When I’m upset, I have difficulty focusing on other things), impulse control difficulties (e.g., When I’m upset, I have difficulty controlling my behaviours), lack of emotional awareness (e.g., I pay attention to how I feel), limited access to emotion regulation strategies (e.g., When I’m upset, I believe that I will remain that way for a long time), and lack of emotional clarity (e.g., I have no idea how I am feeling).
