I am having slag analysis of hot metal with 51% CaO, 14% FeO, 16% SiO2 etc. How do I calculate mole fraction of CaO?

It is difficult to calculate mol. % of the mixture constituents and part of its not defined. If you define the type and weight percent of all constituents, then you get a total weight percent of 100%. Now to calculate mole% of CaO or any, and/or all slag compounds mol.% follow steps:

(1) Assume 100 grams of slag as basis weight for calculation.

(2) Multiply each compound weight percent by 100 gram to get its weight.

(3) Estimate the molecular weight of each compound.

(4) Divide the weight of each compound by its molecular weight to get the number of moles for each compound.

(5) Calculate the total number of moles for all compounds.

(6) Divide the number of moles of each compound by the total number of moles for all compounds and multiply by 100 to get the mole percent of each compound.

(7) To make sure that your calculation is correct, the total mole% for all compounds should be 100%.

I prefer to do the calculation by yourself to get practical sense before you go to any software.
