Has anyone encountered hydrogen sulfide gas in an hydraulic oil system? If so, I would like to hear what caused it and any solutions. Papers and reports would be great!
This is a refined oil, so the H2S is not related to petroleum production. Thanks!
Chemical decomposition and degradation can occur in the hydraulic oil system due its use over time and especially if the hydraulic oil experience heating (temperature rise) during its use in the system. Upon degradation/ decomposition, gases would evolve including sulfur-containing gases like the hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This gas has a unique unpleasant order.

We have practical experience with development of H2S in transformer oil and hydraulic systém in hydro power plants. In both cases we proved presence of sulfate reducing bacteria in hydraulic oil, it means that H2S was of biological origin (biological sulfate reduction).

Yes, of cource. WE used common microbiological isolation techniques on agar plates under anaerobic conditions.
