If the basic needs of food, education and shelter are provided (or easy to access), the most logic thing to happen is a progressive abandonment of religious thinking. Otherwise, monoteism seems to be the most popular option among "believers", centralized or not, it depends of the level of individualization in every society.

Months have passed and time is a philosophical concept now. During the past thousands of years, religion has been getting bronchial and dividing one from the other. For example, the division of many new religions from the basic Hebrew religion. On the other side, science has departed farther away from religion, which were originally one: i.e. religion is or included in philosophy and vice versa. The future, probably, they will become one again as people will find more and more commonalities among them. The process will not be easy, but possible.

Significance.--- Is it possible for the human brain to be activated by the dying process? We addressed this issue by analyzing the electroencephalograms (EEG) of four dying patients before and after the clinical withdrawal of their ventilatory support and found that the resultant global hypoxia markedly stimulated gamma activities in two of the patients. The surge of gamma connectivity was both local, within the temporo–parieto–occipital (TPO) junctions, and global between the TPO zones and the contralateral prefrontal areas. While the mechanisms and physiological significance of these findings remain to be fully explored, these data demonstrate that the dying brain can still be active. They also suggest the need to reevaluate role of the brain during cardiac arrest.

Abstract.--- The brain is assumed to be hypoactive during cardiac arrest. However, animal models of cardiac and respiratory arrest demonstrate a surge of gamma oscillations and functional connectivity. To investigate whether these preclinical findings translate to humans, we analyzed electroencephalogram and electrocardiogram signals in four comatose dying patients before and after the withdrawal of ventilatory support. Two of the four patients exhibited a rapid and marked surge of gamma power, surge of cross-frequency coupling of gamma waves with slower oscillations, and increased interhemispheric functional and directed connectivity in gamma bands. High-frequency oscillations paralleled the activation of beta/gamma cross-frequency coupling within the somatosensory cortices. Importantly, both patients displayed surges of functional and directed connectivity at multiple frequency bands within the posterior cortical “hot zone,” a region postulated to be critical for conscious processing. This gamma activity was stimulated by global hypoxia and surged further as cardiac conditions deteriorated in the dying patients. These data demonstrate that the surge of gamma power and connectivity observed in animal models of cardiac arrest can be observed in select patients during the process of dying.

Abstract

The relationship between conscious experience and brain activity has intrigued scientists and philosophers for centuries. In the last decades, several theories have suggested different accounts for these relationships. These theories have developed in parallel, with little to no cross-talk among them. To advance research on consciousness, we established an adversarial collaboration between proponents of two of the major theories in the field, Global Neuronal Workspace and Integrated Information Theory. Together, we devised and preregistered two experiments that test contrasting predictions of these theories concerning the location and timing of correlates of visual consciousness, which have been endorsed by the theories’ proponents. Predicted outcomes should either support, refute, or challenge these theories. Six theory-impartial laboratories will follow the study protocol specified here, using three complementary methods: Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Magneto-Electroencephalography (M-EEG), and intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG). The study protocol will include built-in replications, both between labs and within datasets. Through this ambitious undertaking, we hope to provide decisive evidence in favor or against the two theories and clarify the footprints of conscious visual perception in the human brain, while also providing an innovative model of large-scale, collaborative, and open science practice.

................. GNW and IIT make several different fundamental assumptions about consciousness that are, at this point, challenging to directly test at the relevant level of granularity. In the two experiments outlined here, we focus on specific predictions that differentiate between these two theories regarding various aspects of the NCC that can be empirically addressed using contemporary brain recording techniques. Given the vast and ill-understood complexity of the brain, extant instrumental and biological variability across subjects and trials, and the distinct acquisition methods used, it is possible that no unambiguous answer may emerge from these experiments. At the least, we expect our results to challenge specific aspects of either or both theories and to further our understanding of conscious visual perception by tracking its footprints in the human brain.

An adversarial collaboration to critically evaluate theories of consciousness

Summary

Different theories explain how subjective experience arises from brain activity1,2. These theories have independently accrued evidence, yet, confirmation bias and dependence on design choices hamper progress in the field3. Here, we present an open science adversarial collaboration which directly juxtaposes Integrated Information Theory (IIT)4,5 and Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNWT)6–10, employing a theory-neutral consortium approach11,12. We investigate neural correlates of the content and duration of visual experience. The theory proponents and the consortium developed and preregistered the experimental design, divergent predictions, expected outcomes, and their interpretation12. 256 human subjects viewed suprathreshold stimuli for variable durations while neural activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging, magnetoencephalography, and electrocorticography. We find information about conscious content in visual, ventro-temporal and inferior frontal cortex, with sustained responses in occipital and lateral temporal cortex reflecting stimulus duration, and content-specific synchronization between frontal and early visual areas. These results confirm some predictions of IIT and GNWT, while substantially challenging both theories: for IIT, a lack of sustained synchronization within posterior cortex contradicts the claim that network connectivity specifies consciousness. GNWT is challenged by the general lack of ignition at stimulus offset and limited representation of certain conscious dimensions in prefrontal cortex. Beyond challenging the theories themselves, we present an alternative approach to advance cognitive neuroscience through a principled, theory-driven, collaborative effort. GOD Concept Evolution.--- After the series of digressions on the topic which concerned some of my small writings, for several months I have been conceptualizing something that behaves exactly like an IOTE mentioned in the book. At the current state of the project path, I believe that the only phenomenon that can be assimilated as behavior at an IOTE, is indeed a singularity, understood in an astrophysical sense.

An evolution so rapid that it leaves no breathing room even for the quickest of thoughts. This is what an incipient IOTE will experience.
