This probably depends a lot on the publisher, but for example the Phys. Rev. Style and Notation Guide says the following:

"A very long medium or wide table can be continued on the next page or pages. In addition to its first-page caption, headings, etc., it will need a duplicate set of headings, lines, etc., for each additional continued page. It will also require a “continued” caption ("TABLE I. (continued).") for each additional page of the table."

In other words, they recommend treating the continued table like a new table, but without repeating the caption or changing the ordinal. I would think journals not to be keen to change the font size from their default choice for tables.

Split the table into two or more pages as required.

Paste the Table No (say Table - 1) and the table headings in the second and the consequent pages.

Add Table - 1 Continued (1), Table - 1 Continued (2), Table - 1 Continued (3), ....... in the second and the subsequent pages.

Don't change the font size.

Thank you for the insights. Also found out that different fonts affect the table size a lot, like a lot! than one would expect. I guess the best way is just to reduce some text and use proper fonts

Indeed, if you are producing it for a thesis or other text where you can make the final choice, then adjusting the font or its size may indeed provide the best overall result. (Maybe there are even particular purpose-built fonts that are designed to give good clarity with small height and/or width, and you can find such recommendations by an internet search.) In most journals, however, you probably must use the predetermined in-house fonts and sizes and make the continuation according to their style and formatting guide.

Thank you very much again for your helpful insights, I am actually working on both, the thesis and some papers from the thesis to be submitted to journals. Overall in my thesis i use "Modern Latin Sans" in MS word to write my thesis, but doing large tables with these fonts is very difficult. For now, for tables and equations i am using "latin modern math fonts" which look very similar to LM sans but as you pointed out their is a little smaller. What i am trying to do is to find a font that looks similar to the rest of the text written in LM sans. I will also use size 11 for tables only while the normal text size is 12 (don't think it matters". Fonts do matter when it comes to tables, i applied different fonts, some of which can double the size of the table. So i am still looking for a font that doesn't look too different from the rest of the text while making the tables smaller.
