In composite materials, volume changes caused by water sorption are dictated mainly by the hydrophilicity of the polymer matrix and solubility of the calcium phosphate fillers.
If water expands the composite, then it might be assumed that the volume is that of the original sample plus the volume of water. You should then be able to show that the percentage volume change comparable with the percentage mass change multiplied by the sample density. Alternatively, if the water occupies pores, then mass will increase but volume remain unchanged.
It is possible to see the effect of both in the same sample.
