My friend is struggling with getting to know the volume density of the precipitates in aluminium alloy. In a certain area (Lexp2) you have n number of precipitates, how would you calculate the volume density of these precipitates? I hope I am asking the right question.

If I understand your question correctly then may I suggest the use of low angle X-ray tomography. This would enable you to determine exactly the location/distribution and effective volume of the precipitates, provided they have a different density than the matrix.
Alternately, a rough estimate could be obtained using Archimedes principle. If a equal mass sample can be prepared without the precipitates, the difference in volume would give an estimate of the porosity.

What is meant by volume density? In case the volume density is the reciprocal value of density, then the volume density can be derived from the crystallography of the precipitates concerned. In case volume density means the number of precipitates per unit specimen volume, then the volume density can be measured by quantitative microscopy. However: which research question is going to be solved by knowing the volume density of precipitates in an Al alloy?
If you have an area of interest (area of precipitates?) divided by the total area Imaged then it's easy to show that these areas are the same as volumes. I understand that there may be confusion in the other answerers. A density distribution in statistics is nothing to do with mass/unit volume. It's a way of expressing the frequency plots so that we have (here for example) quantity (volume or area per cent) per unit size (could be linear dimension, areas, or volumes).
