We know that principal stress reversal happens in axial extension test (Holtz and Kovacs). Horizontal stress becomes the major principal stress (sigma1), while vertical stress becomes minor principal stress (sigma3).
Does this mean
Sigma 3=-tensile strength
sigma1=0
Is this correct? Kindly help

Yes, it is if there is no confining pressure.
But, with conf. pr., sigma 1 is constant, which is the conf. pr., while the sigma 3 reduces with increase in tension, and possibilities are there for this value goes in to -ve if the material is strong enough to take high tension.
