While I was thinking on the same topic, one of the facets of the above topic can be seen as per nano-technology as to what extent replacing the older construction materials with construction materials developed by nano-technology can contribute to the goal of sustainability and energy efficiency.

Construction materials are the essence of a building and as we make any change in them, we get in-numerous permutations and combinations that brings change in the various aspects of a building. Recent advancement in the field of nano-technology have paved way for further more such permutations and combinations that may change the entire architecture, interior design, design and construction industry. While there are already a few examples from clothes to buildings, food to medical treatments, our interest is concentrated more on the aspects related to the exploitation of these materials in building construction and renovation. Since there is a great demand for energy efficiency and sustainability in the field of architecture and construction, there has been an array of materials developed to serve the purpose.

As expected by United Nation, our human population in this planet is going to grow, reaching around 9-10 billion. That's to say, in those developping countries are facing the stress of housing for such a huge population in the near 100 years. So, high rise building technology and design concept should be an important direction for these areas, And the well-developped techonoly in US and on-going construction history in China can be good case for study.

However, for those ancient europian cities, population is decreasing and it's not new building but new building concept or design that will take more importance. Like how to live with nature, interface of Building Information System, etc,

For those less developped area, ecnomic construction technology and use-friendly materials should be welcomed. Pre-fabrication and massive assembly house design would be a better direction for a certain period of time under great need.

For this ever-lasting imbalanced world of economy, we have to choose different ways to go. Anyway, some basic building requirements are always the same: to the scale of human body, to the need of human emotion (memory, history) and to the updated human activies (working in home, private plane, huge roof-connected urban garden...).

In near future the sustainability and designing smart buildings will play such an important role. Prefabrication, rapid prototype and mass customization... will define the new way of designing for architects and engineers, in this competition materials with more adaptability with industrialization will utilize more in construction.

Future buildings need to be conceived of as a "product" (rather than a building or construction system) and prduced as most other products by latest technology (automation, robots, in factories, etc.).
