Analysts say that all business sectors will be affected by covid crisis?
- 'All' is such an absolute term. Do you really thing ALL business will be affected by the crisis?
- Which sectors are likely to have better chance of survival versus others?
- Are there sectors that can 'profit' from this situation or turn threats to opportunities?
Thank you
The ones who are definitely effected are food services (restaurants, grocery stores), air companies and events.
Food services should invent contact-free delivery choices (from each restaurants and grocery stores) it will help them to stay afloat, and it will probably be dominant in the predictable future.
The air companies have been hit the hardest, as countries across Europe have closed their borders. It is hard to give a sloution for them and also it is hard to foresse how will the future oubreak for air companies.
Many events are either postponed or canceled, a lot of them moved online. Online conferencing helps people to be interested in different events and also stay safe during COVID 19.
It appears that there are many sectors of the economy have identified interesting and dynamic ways of working and I believe that we will not be going back fully to the pre-COVID-19 era in many cases such as education , financial services and to a certain respect some aspects of retail sector.
I agree with Egzona Aliu that some of the most affected sectors are the hospitality sector simply because people need to physically go to restaurants etc.
The biggest winners are the IT services and online retail platforms such as amazon, ebay, etc. and unfortunately from my point of view I strongly believe this will sadly be the end of a significant proportion of our high streets which have been in decline for years.
I think health sector, and the agricultural sector can also have huge share in making profit.
my tourism business had stopped. the biggest affected sector is tourism industry.
Yes,I do believe all the sectors are going to effected by the crisis either on positive or negative ways.
Food producers, any kind of,have a chance to survive from any crisis because food is the main need of human beings,it not a luxury that we can act like not to see it.
Again food procuders might be the first who can profit from this situation.
Food producer , you might mean the food material or staff, in this crisis , shops and supermarkets are the most beneficial as well as health sector, but if you mean the restaurant , it depends on country , those who has cuisine in home, so all restaurants are affected but those who depends their cuisine on restaurant , I think in this case , restaurant has got positive affects.
I do believe that all facets of business will be effected in one way or another... production, gathering of goods, growing of the crops, workers in the warehouses putting the packages stogether, truchers to transport the item, gas attendants, story owners and then one turns to the health care workers..... Resiliece is the only answer to help everyone... pull for your strenths to get thu this challenging time.
Almost all sectors suffered losses, such as the auto, clothing and food industries, because most companies became dependent on their factories in China, and the virus forced them to restrict their travel to China and temporarily close their stores, offices, and restaurants.
and its important to get Government support, remote work, use of online technologies, and use of communication technologies such as Hangouts and Skype to stay afloat
More than 90% of all businesses are small businesses, and they employ about half the US workforce. Most small businesses lack the cash reserves to weather a month long interruption, and the forecasts indicate more than 5 million workers could lose their jobs in just one week as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
I would venture to say that the majority of businesses will continue to be affected moving forward. This is a critical time to evaluate operations and tap into ingenuity. I feel that mitigation components, in regards to minimizing the devastating impacts of Covid-19, will need to be improved upon within the supply chains and all industries. These measures will help to better ensure the health and safety of employees, which should be the highest priority, and also help maximize efficiency & profits. Build and flex those "persistency muscles"! Covid-19 won't keep us down!
There is no doubt that the Coronavirus (covid-190) will impact the real economy. However, in some sectors of activity, this impact will be positive due to the demand for products, inputs and services for policies to combat and mitigate the effects of the pandemic. Other sectors will have a negative impact due to the interruption or decrease in the activities of companies. Thus, it is necessary, first, to identify the sectors affected positively and negatively to better understand the causes and, later, to seek solutions for the recovery of the companies negatively affected. I believe that the analysis of working capital management should guide the discussions and research. These companies will probably receive government incentives, but they also need to improve their short-term financial management (working capital) and, to do so, use the analysis of dynamic liquidity models (see: https: //revistas.face.ufmg. br / index.php / Contabilidadeidadevistaerevista / article / view / 4654) and the liquidity value (see: https://seer.ufrgs.br/read/article/view/57359) would be appropriate and interesting.
Thanks.

The Indian hospitality and tourism industry will be very adversely hit. According to an estimate, there may be a potential job loss of around 38 million, which is 70 per cent of the total workforce. It must be noted that majority of workers in tourism industry, in informal sector, would be severely hit by a lockdown.Govt. Support, relaxation in taxation are needed to revive the sector.
In my humble opinion, all of the Sectors are being highly affected during this corona virus pandemic but not all industries in these sectors are affected! While majority of the industries are taking huge blows from day to day and are barely surviving, two industries are highly profiting, those are the entertainment industry and tech industry. For example, Netflix and similar entertainment websites are profiting a lot since everyone is at home spending their time by watching movies, shows and such while everyone in the Tech industry is working on new apps, new medical equipment, new innovative technologies that could put an end to this crisis etc.
I think so, this is a global crisis and everyone will be affected, just not the same way. Things we consider luxury and companies making those things will hit the most. When people realize that they can't afford to live the same way as before the crisis, they will start to make decisions about what not to buy. They will cancel their vacations and travel arrangements, so the tourism will suffer. Also construction companies and manufacturing anything that is not essential is gonna feel that hit.
On the other side will, most probably, be companies that provide goods or services that are still affordable after the crisis ends, as well as healthcare and education.
From my point of view, the crisis will affect the majority of the business sector, but not the whole business sector. There are three types of industries in the business sector during the crisis.
-First type are the industries that are affected by the crisis but they will need time to recover (example: tourism, traffic, marketing etc.)
-Second type are industries which are affected by the crisis but their recovery will be fast (for example hairdressers, dentists etc.)
-Third type are industries that have their expansion during the crisis, for example production industries.
This crisis is a lesson for most European countries that their bases for country's economy shouldn't be in the tourism and its participation in GDP shouldn't be high. Toursim is the most affected industry and everything which we can link with the tourism, for example hotel industry, catering, traffic etc. Production-oriented economy is more stable than service-market economy and production industries are winners of this crisis. As we can see from the example of China, they are one big organised form which have military, politics and economy power (pruduction-oriented economy) and now all of us had the opportunity to see that power, because they're the country with the smallest amount of negative consequences from the crisis.
Conclusion:
-The crisis doesn't affect whole business sector
-Better chance for survival have production industries, and most affected parts of the business sector are market-service and they will need some time for recovery
-Sectors which can profit from the crisis are sectors of production, especially production of hygiene and medical supplies, production of essential food and production of protective medical equipment (including fact that they are producing for domestic market).
The big amount of Business will be affected by the COVID crisis due to less spending and restriction from the governments to save the health of the people. We can already see that tourism, small business, coffee shops, and restaurants are already suffering huge losses. Import and Export business is also in problems due to closed borders.
Not all businesses will be affected by the crisis. We can see in the news that some business-like Netflix benefited from this crisis. Also, application producers are not going to be affected because almost all students from the world are now using applications to join online lectures (zoom, meet).
Communication Services have a better chance of surviving than manufacturing. The difference between these two is that for communications services sectors you need your laptop and you can do your job from home while in the manufacturing that is not the case. We can see that some car manufacturers closed their operations for the first time in their history
The communication service sector can profit from this situation because people are staying at home and have more free time to use services that are offered by this sector.
From my perspective, almost every business sector will be affected, either positively or negatively.
In the category of negatively affected business, I would say that firms depending on the import of intermediate goods needed for the production of final goods will face slowdowns in production (for example, car manufactures, smartphone makers). Also, shopping malls and clothing stores are being closed, so their sales are decreasing (the exception here can be stores that offer online shopping). Foodservices will also have a decrease in sales due to lockdowns. Airlines are forced to cancel almost all flights, which results in the loss of millions of profit.
But, on the other side, some of these businesses are only temporarily affected, so when the crisis ends, they will recover faster. For example, food services, shopping malls, hair, and beauty services will be the first ones to start working when the crisis ends.
When it comes to sectors that will benefit, I believe that businesses that rely on technology and the internet are the ones. As people are spending more time at their homes, social networks, and communication tools (for example, Zoom) are becoming more popular. Streaming services (YouTube, Netflix, Disney+) and media platforms are seeing a boost in their usage and in their profits.
Different business sectors are suffering from the crisis caused by the corona virus but I believe there is a possibility that over time everything will go back to the old one. The economy also suffers, but if the situation in the world stabilizes and people return to their old jobs, the situation will gradually improve. We currently have many online sales, which pulls some companies out of this crisis but not completely. Prices for certain items will certainly be reduced, but if there is a shortage of some products, it is possible that some businesses that own these products will experience success and high profits.
I believe that almost every business sector will be affected by Coronavirus outbreak. The restaurant industry is one of the most exposed industries to major upheaval as a result of the pandemic. Millions of jobs in the sector could either be lost or severely impacted by the outbreak. They should take delivery services seriously if they want their company to survive. They will deliver and make money again. The airline industry will be especially hard hit by the pandemic as internatinal and even domestic flights are restricted. This will results in the loss of millions of profit. As people continue to work from home and avoid travel, the demand for oil and gas has plumetted.
The effects on the oil industry have been especially dire because China, the world's top energy consumer, was the first to be hit as the source of the outbreak. It’s hard to give solutions for this business sectors ..
It is hard to give solution for this business sectors, because we don’t know how long this virus will take..
My personal opinion on the current state of the world economy is that about 70% of production and sales have declined or completely stopped.I don’t believe that the new situation has affected all sectors, some jobs that were previously less wanted they became overnight the best place for future investment.Sectors that, in my opinion, will have a better chance of survival and even a progression in the future are Primary sector, online services, production of hygiene products, manufacture of medical products.
Sectors currently at risk are tourism, car industry, manufacture of household appliances, real estate sales, banking system...
The companies currently benefiting from this situation are for example Netflix which deals with streaming movies and series online,Amazon, which also sells online, factories manufacturing medicines and antibiotics, telecommunication services which increase day by day a sell of their services.
Personally, I don't think all businesses will be affected. The agricultural sector and therefore the food sector (in terms of supermarkets and distribution centres), the pharmaceutical sector and the health sector continue to work despite the exceptional circumstances we are experiencing worldwide. The most benefited in this sanitary crisis are the E-commerces, since they have been able to continue offering their products under protected conditions and with great efficiency in spite of the circumstances.
COVID-19 is having a significant impact on businesses and the economy. With COVID-19 being a pandemic, people are avoiding travel to different countries and cities, which has negatively impacted the travel business and has affected the tourism benefits of the affected countries. Airlines are drastically cutting flights and flight rates. Shops and car dealerships have all reported a fall in demand. There is also the possibility of a "startup depression," where new companies don't enter the job market because of the pandemic. However some companies have positive growth, such as pharmaceutical companies. Video streaming companies( Netflix, Disney,...) are expected to have a rise in the number of subscribers in the impact of COVID-19.
1. In my personal opinion, this virus has a growing influence on the global economy. The production volume has been reduced due to the consumption volume. For example, for the first time in history the prices of oil have fallen because consumer spending has fallen rapidly and yet the production has remained on the same level. This shows that due to the reduced volume of products the number of employees has decreased by over 20 thousand in the last 2 months only in the federation of Bosnia. The sheer extent of the fall in spending leads to a reduced budget charge of direct and non-direct taxes, which leads to a problem of budget spending. The state is forced to do a budget rebalance to stimulate economy and to soften the economic impact that has been caused by COVID-19. Most of branches have been affected by this some more and some less.
2.In the first row according ot mz opinon better chance of survival will have IT sector and pharmacy and agriculture. One way people can keep their immune system high is through eating healthy other than taking medicine and vitamins. So therefore the employment rate in this sector will raise along with the profit.
3. According to my opinion the best chances to gain profits are pharmacy and IT sector. Due to the increased consumption of suplements, face and hands protections, disinfeciants... Pharmacy will earn profit through that. Before the virus happened not many people for example used certain ways to desinfect their household, yet today it is rare to find any type of disinfectants in the pharmacies. To keep people healthy and safe another way is through certain vitamins and medicine that can be bought only at pharmacies. Therefore the profit of this sector will raise. IT is also something that will gain a lot of profit, everything we do commonly in our lives has been moved to a virtual space. People today work from home through their computers, students follow classes as well in the same way. All platforms must be made and the only people who are able to provide that are the IT companies which own different platforms or solutions that can help in this crisis. Another example is NETFLIX, this service has been gaining a lot of profit ever since the virus started spreading. Online shops are also an example of how to keep people at home so therefore their profit will raise as well(Amazon, ebay etc). In our country most companies in a very short time have provided web shops and created a way for home delivery.
In my opinion, it already affected all businesses but some in positive and some in negative way. Online platforms are growing fast especially games and sites for movies (ex. Netflix). There are a lot of businesses that are falling because they are closed but some of them already found a way to save themselves with online selling or delivery. In this situation, everybody should have good decision making.
It is well known that the situation in which we found ourselves is destroying the economy.
There are lot of businesses who are affected by the corona virus, some of them are even closing their businesses because they cannot deal with the situation. Even if the situation is bad, there are some businesses that are working with full power, such as people who are making respirators, masks and equipment. We need groceries every day, so that means all supermarkets and grocery stores will be in good position and still in life. Not to forget about platforms for meetings and, of course, Netflix which are used constantly.
I think that tourism is most negative affected and that this branch will have most consequences.
In such situations we should all make clever decisions and stay safe.
- Yes,I really think that all business will be affected in one way or another.Today's economy is so much connected on a global level,so that every link in the business chain has to get an impact from the crisis. There is no business segment or industry that can survive on itself without working with other industries.Of course, the impact has to be on a different level regarding of the business type.
-Sectors which are perceived as elementar for normal living such as food production, farmaceuticals, hygiene, home entertainment and transport of goods has a much better chance to survive a crisis of this type.We can also say that ''stay-at-home'' businesses will handle this situation well.
-We can certainly say that on the short term, there will be business segments such as online shopping, home entertainment, telecommunications, health supplies and protection equipment production which will profit in these times, but on the long term even this business segments will suffer losses.Again, that has to do with the fact that purchase power of many will be reduced.
COVID 19 crisis has an impact on the global economy. All business sectors are affected by the crisis, either in negative or positive way.
The air companies have suffered the largest lost, since they are forced to denounce all flights.
Clothing stores are closed, but positive thing is that a large number of clothing stores have an online shipping. In that way, they can make a profit.
Pharmaceutical companies, home entertainment, streaming companies, especially netflix, they are gaining profit, and they have the biggest chance to survive COVID 19 crisis.
Dear professor and colleagues,
- Speaking generally, I strongly believe that literally all business sectors will be somehow affected by COVID/19 crisis because this global problem is affecting all despite of profession, occupation or position at work and literally everyone is in danger.
- But, thinking locally, I do believe that there are some differences in between impacts of COVID/19 to different sectors. Workers employed in small businesses will be afected the most and feel crisis at its the most cruel form as well as economy in under developed countries such our is.
This acctually lead us to the conclusion that with higher income in company decreases danger of finantial collapse caused by COVID-19.
- This situatiion we face with is not absolutely bad because, I do believe, this could be time for profit for individuals who think outside the box and are brave enough to use entreprenueurial spirit and try with some new patent or change used way of obtaining business. I think this is such lucky time for inovators and creative thinkers.
When it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina, I think that in this situation ort medical institutions with appropriate project strategies, can benefit with foreign donations of medical equipment from developed countries and international founds.
Hoping my answer meets requirements,
I sincerely regard you all!
In my opinion not all business sectors will be affected by COVID-19 crisis. We have businesses that will be affected just a little bit or not at all, than businesses that will be affected but not that much, and businesses that will be really hard affected.
The first category includes businesses such as pharmacy, businesses that manufacture sanitary ware, followed by the media, or computer-related businesses because their work continues in a normal manner in 90% of cases.
Then the second category, businesses that were based on working with people but they have adjusted their work to the current situation. Many services have enabled to continue running your business such as E-Learning, online fitness classes, food and grocery delivery services, and telecommunications apps. Also, many companies have been able to adapt to working from home.
And the third category, the category that refers to the most vulnerable group, is the hardest hit category. As I wrote, many businesses have adapted their work to the new situation but there are many industries that can not switch to a digital platform and continue functioning such as hair salons, Spa, events movie, theaters, and the tourism. Industry such as Airlines, import export companies, retailers advanced, restaurants, and many other non-essential services have been hit, some harder than others.
As we are all aware, this situation with COVID 19 has already caused a lot of consequences for the economy worldwide. Considering all negative, as well as positive effects that this virus has already caused, we are facing the fact that the recovery for the majority of business sectors will not be "over the night" and will take more time. In my opinion, I would agree that many business sectors will be affected by this situation, but not all of them.
Comparing the business sectors like the pharmaceutical and technology industries with tourism, for example, we can say that tourism is much more affected and will need a long recovery time.
Other examples of affected businesses are also air companies, a huge negative impact on imports/exports because of closed borders,...
On the other side, we have some business sectors which are able to gain a profit/benefit from this bad situation like for example Netflix.
Also, other sectors that are able to provide online services and at the same time don't put their business in stagnation, are able to meet consumer s demand and continue to gain profit as before. They are for example restaurants that provide delivery services, events that are performed in online form instead of in a place where they should have been organized, and others.
- NO. but One important impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the downstream oil industry is that the price of crude oil has fallen significantly in a short time, taking billions off the stock prices of major oil and gas companies
- technology industry is more likely one of the sectors to survive the crisis also hygiene companies and mask producing companies
- As i mentioned in the above answer technology industry is profiting from the crisis and here is the example:
Microsoft, it announced last week the number of daily active users for its Teams collaboration suite increased by 12 million, though there are many others who are financially better off also.
Zoom Video Communications, a remote conferencing services company headquartered in San Jose, has seen share price increase 130% since the beginning of the year, while more marketers are turning to companies like ON24 to purchase webcasting and webinar services to ensure lead generation projects can continue.
I don't think that all sectors will be affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
The ones who are definitely effected are the food service industries, the air travel and hospitality industries. In many countries across the world, safety measures included a shuttering of all of the restaurants, bars, and cafés, which forced them to move to a solely delivery-based business model. Countries across Europe have either closed their borders or at least introduced extensive safety measures intended to curb movement, which has negatively impacted the travel business.
Some companies have positive growth, such as pharmaceutical companies. I think their business has increased because of the COVID-19 virus. I also think that this virus affected the psyche of people, people started thinking more about their health and hygiene.
As a result of COVID-19, there’s been a huge spike in the use of online services across the board for work, education, and, yes, for entertainment. Services like Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, and others are seeing spikes in users. Indeed, Netflix’s latest financial results showed the service added a whopping 15.8 million subscribers — over double what was expected. Also Netflix has posted a number of educational shows for free via YouTube. Several full seasons of shows from Apple TV Plus and YouTube Originals are also available to stream and watch for free.
While many events were either postponed or outright canceled, a lot of them moved online. From online conferencing to live gigs, technology helps people interested in different events gather without breaking quarantine.
I haven't done a sector by sector analysis but I have written an article on How to Manage an Organisation through a Crisis that may be useful.
https://medium.com/@alex__morrison/how-to-manage-an-organisation-through-a-crisis-89db730f0e82
Although the coronavirus pandemic has sent stock markets into free fall and some industries to the wall, many firms that enable more private, online and tech-based living are emerging as potential winners. Like for an example streaming firms ( Netflix, Youtube...) who were forces to reduce quality of streaming because of the immense pressure on their streaming services as their demand is rapidly increasing day by day. As for traditional cinema chains we could be talking about their potential extinction. There are also brands like Zoom whose popularity spiked over night due to more and more people working from home as their demand for technology that enables online group meetings, chats and collaborations increases. At the same time, real world gatherings from sporting events to business conferences, have been postponed or canceled, with a large question mark still lingering over the fate of this summer’s Olympic Games in Japan. But as the time goes by big name companies are finding a way to stay on top, sure it will take some time but they should eventually find a way to overcome these tough situations at the time as the small time companies should be struggling and even not surprisingly go out of business...
I would say that the COVID-19 virus has an impact an all businesses, but for the one more and for the other less.
What I want to say exactly with this is that different areas of businesses get influenced differently by the corona crises. There are companies outside that this influence can help to make big profit, for example the pharmacy industry. None the less there are also companies who get influenced very badly by the crises, for example all the ones who provide services to costumers.
I think the fact, that many borders are closed and that trading among other countries is not the same as it should to be, is enough to say that all businesses are affected by the COVID-19 virus.
The crises has also few positive thinks. Related to businesses the virus can help to provide brand new ideas and companies, because with new situations and problems there will be always new solutions.
In my opinion, all business sectros will be afeccted by COVID-19 virus. Some businesses will be affected more, some less. For example, pharmaceutical companies will be affected less than other businesses because they will continue with their production, especially of sanitary products, which are highly demanded in this crisis and they also can profit more from producing huge amounts of it. Second example are private universities, they are more affected but they have found an alternative/solution how to cope with this situation and they started helding online lectures as well as the exams for students. Business sectors that are the most affected and can't find any alternative, in my opinion, are: restaurants without delivery service, hair salons, import-export companies, beauty salons and similar businesses.
Generally the Covid19 crisis will definitely bring to fore new serious dynamics and thinking to existing or emerging businesses. However this will differ from one part to other part of the world. In developing world where ICT technology has been achoice of few or established concerns the scenario will drastically change especially in consumer markets where online preferences will be the new front of competition. The same goes in electrical electrical energy sub-sector where organizations which have been relying on distribution and selling of electricity have to diversify into provision of ICT services by leveraging on their distribution network to provide dark fiber optic to home services. Research efforts definitely will swing into action to provide new innovations and ensuing solutions to inevitable challenges.
I do not believe that all sectors will be affected in the short term because not all of them have had to stop their business activity.
On the one hand, those most affected will be businesses that are not part of the basic necessities, for example textiles, automobiles, tourism...
On the other hand, those who will benefit most economically will be the food sector, telecommunications, e-commerce and the health sector.
To conclude, I do believe that there are certain businesses for which this crisis is an opportunity, for example pharmacies, or manufacturers of health products.
I believe all businesses will somehow be affected by this Pandemic. Many of them in a negative way but there will be those who will be performing better during this pandemic. In today's global world, the connections of businesses are like spider webs, so when one area or sector is affected, it will definitely affect the other areas/sectors.
Emre, l see us reading from same script. However as mentioned in my earlier comments on this subject alot depends in which economies you are in,levels of development and with crucial words being distancing and contact arising from Covid19 compliance . Definitely any businesses that can technically avoid these two words or come up with mechanisms that can enable both to operate within two confines will thrive. For example in my country tourism and hospitality industries have been the biggest foreign exchange earners. Both are businesses that are already being affected by distancing and contact. Anything that can ameliorate the two such as ICT technology will definitely carry the day.
Sanel Halilbegovic I think that all business will be shakeup in different ways. Can you recommend a construct to measure the likely impact entrepreneurs predict COVID-19 will have on their business?
Dear Sanel Halilbegovic, In Brazil, all sectors were impacted, the biggest losses were from companies linked to tourism, currently the company Ifood has stood out due to the growing need for sales / purchases via delivery.
Kenny l do agree that Covid19 crisis has affected all sectors of business and will continue doing so untill an effective antidote is found. The social distancing and behavioural habits coupled with cultural practices as one moves from one part of the world to another are critical factors to watch . For example businesses that draws their clients from social gatherings activities such as sporting , tourism, entertainment, religious crusades just to mention afew how are they expected to thrive . We may talk of online approch to suffice but will that provide " the social closesness touch " that is obviously required to satisfy clients during such activities? That's the crux of the matter and the big challenge of Covid19.
If the government gives palliatives to all citizens, it will lessen the possibilities of small businesses spending their capital. After re-openings, the economy will then restart faster.
Interesting question dear Prof. Sanel Halilbegovic . Would be interested to know as well.
