Depending on the general tourism structure and the peculiarities of the destination/municipality under scrutiny, you can start by putting the number of overnight stays in relation to the inhabitants. A general measure is that of tourism intensity (nr. of overnight stays per 100.000 inhabitants), allthough this calculation is mostly appropriate for urban destinations. Usually the timeframe observed for this calculation is one year (again, could make sense for urban destinations, as they exhibit a smaller seasonality than rural destinations).

For rural destinations it might would make sense to calculate the nr. of overnight stays per 1.000 or even 100 inhabitants and look at the different months of the year, in order to include also the seasonality factor.

During a second step you can look at the changing rate for the past 10 to 20 years (if you have that kind of data) in order to understand how the tourism intensity has been evolving in respect to the inhabitants. This can give you a valuable starting point towards the definition of the carrying capacity of a destination from a socio-cultural perspective.

It is represented in the number of tourists, the patterns of daily visits, and the activities they do because the environment is exposed to changes beyond the control of the person or the tourist. Some negatives: 1. The motor vehicles destroy the natural environment and its aesthetics, and affect the historical environment and its antiquities. 2. Tourism establishments that do not adhere to sound environmental management systems. 3. The influx of tourists in large and unplanned numbers, which ruins the historical monuments. 4. The absence of sustainable development makes the positive effects of tourism temporary and tracing them negative effects in the long run. 5. The increase in solid waste and untreated sewage in the seas and natural watersheds, with the increase in air pollution.
