I am not sure whether I understand your question properly. At the whole the energy flows are more or less linked to the amount of wastes (in your case bio mass) and its respective mass specific energy content.
Thanks for you answer, yes the amount wastes is one part of the puzzle, but also I think in solar, eolic and energy crops.

Have thought about a statement of purpose for your research project? Do you have a hypothesis you wish to test? What is/are your research question/s? Are you looking at the energy flow through the forests of Costa Rica, or through agricultural landscapes?
