I'm interested in measuring the thermal conductivity and diffusivity of microencapsulated Phase Changing Materials in pure form, using Transient Plane Source method, with Hot Disk TPS 1500. Does anyone know how to build the set-up? Where to put the probe, time of measurements, applied power, etc.
All help is appreciated!
Since your sample is a powder of microcapsules, you can simply use the isotropic module with the probe in the middle of it. You should perform measurments below and/or above the transition temperature, because the method does not allow measurements of thermal conductivity or diffusivity during the phase change, the latent heat being not included in the interpretation model of the method.
Therefore, the applied power should be small enough to avoid any phase change, even close to the probe.
Dear Liliya, the Hot Disk method doesn't have analytical solution to calculate thermal properties of the Phase Change Materials. But you can measure thermal conductivity and volumetric specific heat, and then calculated thermal diffusivity of your Phase Change Materials using our FOX Heat Flow Meter instruments.
