The concept of carbon dots is rather general, there is no clear definition, look at the literature, everyone is sticking to their own words, is there any exact technique, such as conventional Raman, TEM, etc., how to use the characterization to prove that it is graphene quantum dots?
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are graphene nanoparticles with a size less than 100 nm. Its have to exceptional properties such as low toxicity, stable photoluminescence, chemical stability and pronounced quantum confinement effect.
Therefore, show in anyway way (Raman, TEM, etc.) that the you graphene nanoparticles with a size less than 100 possess of the exceptional properties. :)

Hi Li, I also had this kind of question about the definition of GQDs. Based on my experiences, GQDs can be defined mainly by the TEM, Raman, XRD, and PL. Raman and XRD are for the verification of graphitic structures. Most importantly, we must show the size-dependent PL peak shift (kind of quantum size effect) to mention they are "GQDs" based on the comparisons of TEM and PL characterizations.
Yes, many of the current reports are limited to TEM, XRD, Raman and PL characterization to indicate that the prepared products are GQDs. However, I think many of the reports have misunderstanding and incorrect definitions of GQDs. Especially for the morphological description of GQDs, I think GQDs are not quasi-spherical nanoparticles and should belong to the nanostructure of sheet layers. Therefore, they possess obvious differences in lateral and vertical heights. I am puzzled by a lot of literature, which claims that the prepared quantum dots are GQDs, and it seems to me that the products they reported should belong to CDs or CQDs.@Taishu Yoshinaga
