We are a groups of students who are conducting various research projects in our college under the guidance of our professors. The students have all contributed equally to the project and we want to know how can 2 or 3 of can get the same authorship status like 1st co authors or 2nd co authors. Our professors are third and corresponding authors for the projects. At the time of submission in journal how can we ensure this?

As per the MLA and APA citation styles if multiple authors are there in a research paper 1st and 2nd authors names are mentioned in the paper based on contribution made usually the person who writes the paper is given 1st author ship, and et al. Is used for more than 2 authors a greek letter symbolizing others. If all the authors are having equal contribution a special footnote is being added acknowledging the equal contribution. If you have done multiple papers, then I would say that the approach suggested by Subir Bandyopadhyay is definitely a good idea. If only one, I would suggest to confirm with the editor(s) to give joint first authorship. Some journals will permit that but unfortunately some will not.
Authorship and the order of authors are difficult questions when writing scientific publications and sometimes lead to conflicts. There is no general definition of the meaning of the places of the authors in a list of authors. However, the author X who is first in the list or the first three authors X, Y, Z are a little bit priviledged, because very often the publication will be cited as "X et al." (or "X, Y, Z et al."). Sometimes it is assumed that the first author in the list is the "main" one, who contributed most to the paper. But this is a wrong assumption, at least in many cases. Often the order of the author list is alphabetical, because it is not possible to say who contributed more and who less. Another wide-spread method is to put the author who wrote down the results and managed the publication to the first place and list all other authors in alphabetic order. Some journals indicate a "corresponding author", but this does not necessarily mean that this author is the "main" one for this paper.

There should be mutual agreement among the authors about who takes first, second, third or fourth authorshio in the research project. Once agreed, prepare a title page and state the name of all authors according to the agreed order of authorship. In the journal submission portal, you may be asked to fill in the co-author names in the agreed order. I hope this helps.
